SHONDA SCHILLING
BOARD MEMBER
38 Studios' board member Shonda Schilling is the founder of the SHADE Foundation of America, dedicated to eradicating melanoma by educating children and communities across the country about skin cancer and sun safety. Since 2002, SHADE has reached millions of people through SunWise, a sun-safety curriculum for schools created through a partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency; and the “Play It Smart When It Comes to The Sun” program, a Major League Baseball initiative aimed at promoting skin cancer screenings in ballparks across the country. In order to further promote sun safety, Shonda has participated in numerous TV commercials, appeared in Women's Magazine, Glamour, Family Circle, Pregnancy, and Good Housekeeping, and was on Geraldo At Large, The View; she also had a guest spot in the movie Bride Wars just for fun. Shonda also produced the 2008 Sun Protection Flicks Campaign documentary. Shonda has completed four Boston Marathons and a half marathon on behalf of the SHADE Foundation.

In addition to her work with SHADE, Shonda supports the ALS Association, whose mission is to aid people living with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), and to find a cure for this fatal disease. Shonda has biked to raise money for ALS, and has also biked on behalf of cancer research (the Pan Mass Challenge) and Best Buddies, a program dedicated to supporting people with intellectual disabilities. Over the years, Shonda and her husband Curt have raised millions of dollars for various charities in several states.

Shonda has won numerous awards for her dedication to charitable endeavors, including the Speaker Thomas J. “Tip” O'Neill, Jr. Award for Public Service from the Greater Boston Federal Executive Board; an individual achievement Gold Triangle Award from the American Academy of Dermatology; the Gilda Radner Award; the Partners in Prevention Award from the Interscholastic Athletic Association; the Lady Baden Powell Good Scout Award from the Boston Minuteman Council; the Exceptional Women's Award for Community Service from Boston Radio Station MAGIC 106.7; the Outstanding Fundraiser Award from the Association of Professional Fundraisers; and the Girl Scout World of Humanity Award by the Arizona Cactus-Pine Council. In May 2009, Shonda and her husband Curt were the first inductees into the ALS Association's Hall of Fame, in recognition of their passionate, continuing support of the Association.

A graduate of Towson University in Maryland with a B.S. in Mass Communications, Shonda was selected as Zeta Tau Alpha's 2004 Outstanding Alumna and Towson University's 2007 Outstanding Alumna. She has also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Merrimack College and an honorary doctorate in public service from Framingham State for her outstanding charity work.

A proud mother of four — Gehrig, Gabriella, Grant, and Garrison — Shonda stays active in her community and continues to raise funds for charity by doing speaking engagements around the Boston area. Shonda has served on the 38 Studios' Board of Directors since the company's inception in late 2006.
