As part of a continuing effort to support game development programs at local universities, 38 Studios played host to an enthusiastic group of students and faculty members from Rhode Island School of Design in March. Mary Jane Begin, Nick Jainschigg, and their Electronic Book class visited the Maynard Studio to get a first-hand look at a game development studio. They were treated to a series of presentations from the Project Copernicus development team and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of an average day in the studio.
Director of Art, Thom Ang, and Senior Artists Kari Sutherland, Billy Ahlswede, Niraj Desai, and Aaron Carlson shared with students how they each got their start in the games industry, and how their careers eventually led them to 38 Studios. They presented tips on how students should best prepare themselves for careers as concept artists, character artists, environment artists, and animators.
38 Studios team members and RISD grads Nicholas Kole, Fabiola Garza, Cory Turner, Brandon Cebenka, and interns Lucas St Martin and Kai Carpenter answered questions and discussed their own transitions from RISD to 38 Studios.
The day was great fun for 38 Studios and a wonderful learning experience for RISD students and faculty. 38 Studios is looking forward to fostering further game development interest at RISD and other local universities soon!
