Big Winners!
We're pleased to announce the winners of the second annual Massachusetts Game Challenge! This year's competition was rife with amazing games submitted by college students across the country. Is the second year of a competition's existence too early to say we received a record number of entries? Well, we did! The judging panel enjoyed playing so many quality entries that they had a tough time selecting the top three. But select they did! Without further ado, the winners are: |
First Place - Munch's Vacation 2 by James Grant, Andrew Silvernail, and Patrick Walley of Becker College. You may recognize this team as the winners of the first Massachusetts Game Challenge. They returned with a bigger and better sequel to last year's entry, placing Munch and his four friends into unique vehicles for a classic side-scrolling shooter stuffed full with multiple weapon types, countless enemies, and huge boss battles.

Second Place - Munch's Lost Timepieces by Elena Ainley and Brian Hettrick of WPI. This endearing side-scroller charmed the judges with its cohesive and adorable art style and simple gameplay mechanics. Munch must save his village from Mean Munch by eating harmless creatures, transforming into their shape (dolphin, bat, zebra), and using their innate abilities (flying, swimming, smashing through rocks) to collect magical timepieces.

Third Place - KickBack by Daniel Bjorge, Samuel Rogers, and William Decker of WPI. Here's a great recipe on how to be a finalist in the Massachusetts Game Challenge: Take a fun and challenging gameplay mechanic, carefully ramp up the difficulty curve for your players, and throw in over 2,000 lines of original Python code. This Munch-themed twist on the classic game Asteroids is easy to pick up, yet difficult to master. |
All winners and their academic advisors were treated to an awards luncheon here at 38 Studios. Click any of the images above for more information.
Thanks to all who entered! Munch has achieved his dream of becoming a video game superstar yet again. And just a quick reminder for all eligible students -- it is never too soon to begin work on your entry for Massachusetts Game Challenge 3! See you next year!
