One of the great benefits of 38's location is our proximity to so many impressive colleges and universities. Read on to learn about some of the events that have brought us closer to New England's academic community.
Starting back in January, Producer Paul Mock visited the New England Institute of Art as part of their open house event, speaking with faculty and learning more about their programs. Look for Paul's follow-up gig with the New England Institute of Technology on March 10th, where he will speak to engineering students about working in the game industry.
Also in January, 38 Studios welcomed several students from M.I.T.'s prestigious Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab. The students learned about the various aspects of game development from a wide selection of 38 staff and toured our facilities. A couple of weeks later in February it was M.I.T.'s turn to host us as Executive Producer Gavian Whishaw demonstrated to students what it takes to break into the video game industry and shared valuable job-hunting tips to students about to enter the work force.
You may have heard about the great time had by all at the recent Massachusetts Game Challenge-themed WPI Game Jam. Designer Jesse Smith enjoyed interacting with the students so much he went back on March 5th to help judge the final presentations of WPI's Technical Game Development and Artistic Game Development courses. Fellow judges included Turbine's Cardell Kerr, Dejobaan Games' Ichiro Lambe, and Iron Lore co-founder Brian Sullivan. Together the quartet played the role of publishers, determining which projects were worthy of a share of their millions of fake dollars. Jesse was partial to "Last Man Dreaming," "The Machine," and of course "Lion vs. Gazelle II: This time it's a Cheetah."
